Dominica offers a lot to the shopping enthusiast. All the markets here have a wonderful ambience, making it a pleasure to browse through them, and the interesting and unique products make great mementos or souvenirs to take home.
In these modern times when monotonous malls are taking over the world, there is a distinct satisfaction in shopping the old-fashioned way.
This Dominica Shopping Guide gives details of shops throughout the island, which you may like to visit and browse through in order to find that perfect gift or souvenir. And if all this shopping makes you hungry or thirsy, why not check out our Dominica Restaurants Guide, which lists a variety of eating establishments to satiate your hunger.
Dominica Shopping Guide
To begin with, these markets showcase the local culture and the indigenous wares. Listen to people communicating in the local dialects and feel the flavour of the place. You can watch craftsmen creating beautiful artefacts and souvenirs Feast your eyes and let the aroma of local spices, natural soaps and oils seep in.
The most significant market in Roseau is the Old Market, which dates back a few centuries. It was once a slave trading place but now sells anything from handicrafts, vegetables and spices to cloth. The market is especially vibrant three days in a week - Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays - as people come here from far flung places to sell their local produce.
Dominican Crafts
Like most agriculture-based societies, Dominica has a wealth of handmade products that utilize the simplest of materials. The most commonplace things are turned into breathtaking art. Coconut husks, banana strands, larouma reeds, vetiver grass blades, straw and just about any kind of natural fibre is converted into a host of household products that are biodegradable and therefore environment friendly.
You can also buy some great gift articles such as ceramics, carvings, perfumes or jewellery from one of the many duty free shops that accept dollars, pounds and euros. Do check out bags made out of reed and banana straw at the Carib Reserve Crafts Centre.

Meet Michael and Daria Eugene, owners of Jungle Trekking Adventures and Safaris, your local connection in Dominica. We love the natural surrounds of our beautiful island, as well as the laid-back, spontaneous nature of its people. We also have a strong interest in working within the local community, and therefore we've developed a tourism initiative that targets disadvantaged areas in order to provide real opportunities for development.
